Scale & Polish
We recommend that you brush and floss your teeth twice a day and use mouthwash to reduce harmful bacteria in your mouth that can lead to cavities and gum disease.
Your routine oral hygiene should be supported by regular visits to see your dentist, who can monitor your teeth for early signs of cavities, decay, gum disease or even oral cancers, and to a hygienist who can give your teeth and gums a ‘scale and polish’ to keep them in top condition.
What is a Scale and Polish?
Even with effective, regular brushing and flossing, there will always be parts of your teeth that are difficult to clean properly. Over time, plaque can develop – plaque is made up of bacteria which can cause decay, cavities and gum disease. If left untreated, plaque can develop into tartar, which is yellow-brown in colour and bonds firmly to your teeth enamel above and below the gum line, making it very difficult to remove. Tartar not only looks unsightly but it can lead to receding gums and gum disease, which ultimately cause tooth loss.
It is easy to see why it is so important to get rid of any plaque and tartar before they cause significant problems. Brushing and flossing twice each day will help to keep plaque at bay but we also recommend regular scale and polish treatments that can be delivered by your dentist or one of our expert hygienists.
A scale and polish involves the thorough removal of plaque and any tartar from your teeth and around the gum line using the latest ultrasonic equipment. The surface of your teeth will then be polished to a high shine using our specialist toothpaste, making them look whiter and feel clean and smooth.
