How do you care for invisible aligners?
Invisalign in Gainsborough are quite easy to look after.
Unlike braces that require interdental brushes and plenty of visits to the hygienist, you can clean invisible aligners yourself at home, using a cold water tap.
It is likely that throughout your day, the aligners may become dirty or stained, and so, to remedy this, we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove the debris and staining. If this fails, do not rinse the aligners under hot water as this can cause the plastic to warp out of shape. Also, whilst it may seem harmless, do not use mouthwashes to remove stains either since this too can cause staining to occur.
There are actually cleaning crystals that can be used with aligners, which, when used twice a day, will help to keep them clean and smelling fresh.
Can you drink whilst wearing invisible aligners?
It is advised that when you wear invisible aligners, you only drink water.
To drink other beverages such as tea, coffee or soda, you should remove your aligners as these beverages are high in tannins, which can cause the plastic to stain. But remember, after you have consumed any sugary beverage, you will need to clean your teeth before you put the aligners back into your mouth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease from developing.
Can you smoke whilst using invisible aligners?
Any dentist will advise against smoking, even if you aren’t wearing invisible aligners.
Smoking exposes the gums and the mouth to a myriad of chemicals that can cause the gums to swell and, of course, heighten the chances of you developing oral cancer.
When you wear any kind of orthodontic tool, we advise that you do not smoke because the nicotine contained within the cigarettes can cause your teeth to become yellow and stain. And as you can imagine, if you wear an aligner, smoking can cause it to discolour from clear plastic to yellowish-brown plastic, which will mean it is no longer visually discreet.
How long does it take for invisible aligners to work?
This depends on how severe your dental misalignment is.
On average, however, it takes between 3-6 months for this treatment to work, but that is for mild to moderate misalignments.
This time frame also relies on you keeping your aligners in your mouth for the required 22 hours a day; should you not adhere to this, then your realignment will be delayed and the process will take longer. Also, your teeth may revert to their former positions, once again, wasting time!
